JL Vergnon

For five generation, nearly two centuries, the house that shelters today the Champagne JL Vergnon is owned by the family. In 1950, Jean-Louis inherited from his parents and recreated his vineyards in Le -Mesnil-sur-Oger, a village classified as Grand Cru in the renowed cote des Blancs, homeland of the oldest and most mineral Chardonnay. It’s only in 1985 that the winery produced his first wines, immediately put under the light and distinguished by a “Coup de Coeur” in 1987 by Wine guide Hachette, for his first Extra-Brut.

Nowadays the company owns around 7 hectares, 100% Chardonnay, classified as Grand Cru. In the fields, they practice sustainable farming. The biggest attraction of their champagne is that “you can drink deliciously from an early stage”. The secret lies in “using sufficiently ripe grapes” that maximize the mineral, and “a carefull avoided malo-lactic fermentation” that free the powerfull fruit part of wine. They also allow it to age longer, with a nice long-lasting mouth and a straight attack.

JL Vergnon champagne, describes as “Salinité” in one word, was praised by IWC magazine for its powerful linear minerals, and was praised by WA magazine for its clear taste derived from its beautiful acidity and minerals.
